How to make a name tag or keychain
- Type the text above. Press Enter for a second line.
- Pick what to make: a name tag or sign on a rounded plate, a keychain with a ring hole, letters only, or a stencil.
- Set the letter height in mm and pick the text and base colours.
- Download an STL (one piece) or a 3MF with the text and the base as separate parts, ready for two colours.
Everything is built in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Sizes that print well
- Letter height: 6 mm or more for Regular, 5 mm or more for Bold and Black, with a 0.4 mm nozzle. Smaller text works with a 0.2 mm nozzle.
- Strokes should be at least two nozzle widths (0.8 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle). The tool warns when parts of the letters are thinner.
- Raised letters: 1 to 2 mm above the base reads well; base: 2 mm is stiff enough for a tag, 3 mm or more for a keychain that gets bent around.
Two colours with one nozzle
You don't need a multi-colour printer. Print the base in one colour and swap filament when the letters start: the layer height at the top of the base (2 mm with the default settings).
- PrusaSlicer: slice, then click the + next to that layer on the vertical layer slider to add a colour change.
- Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer: slice, right-click that layer on the layer slider and add a filament change or pause.
- UltiMaker Cura: Extensions → Post Processing → Modify G-Code, add Filament Change at that height.
With a multi-colour printer (AMS, MMU, toolchanger), open the 3MF instead: text and base are separate parts you can give different filaments.
Fonts and letters
The fonts are the Archivo family (Black, Bold, Regular and Italic), with accented Latin letters such as Č, Ć, Š, Ž, Đ, Ł, Ő and Ñ. Characters a font can't draw are listed and left out. For your own font or a logo, save it as an SVG and use SVG to STL, which keeps every colour.
Questions
How do I make a 3D printed name tag?
Type the name in the tool at the top of this page, pick 'Name tag or sign', set the letter height and download the STL, or the 3MF for two colours. It's free and runs in your browser.
How do I print text in two colours on a single-nozzle printer?
Print the base in one colour and add a filament change at the layer where the letters begin (the base thickness, 2 mm by default). PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and Cura can all add that change on the layer slider or with a post-processing script.
What's the smallest text I can 3D print?
With a 0.4 mm nozzle, about 5 mm tall capital letters in a bold font. Thinner fonts need 6 mm or more. A 0.2 mm nozzle roughly halves that.
Can I use letters like Č, Ž or Ñ?
Yes. The fonts include accented Latin letters. Characters they can't draw, such as Chinese or emoji, are shown in a note and left out.
Can I make a keychain with my name?
Yes. Pick 'Keychain': the base follows the outline of the letters and gets a ring with a hole for the key ring.
