How to open a 3MF file without a slicer
- Drop the 3MF above. It opens in your browser, on any computer or phone.
- Rotate, zoom and pan. The panel shows the size in mm, the number of objects and triangles, and which app made the file.
- Untick objects to hide them. Bambu projects with several plates get a button per plate.
- Click Measure to measure between two points in mm.
- Download as STL (merged or per object) or OBJ if you need another format.
What the viewer shows
- Every object, with the names from Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer projects.
- Colours: 3MF materials and colour groups, Bambu filament colours, and PrusaSlicer extruder colours. Areas painted with the paint tool are shown in the object's filament colour, and the viewer tells you when a file contains painting.
- True size: 3MF files store their unit (millimetres unless they say otherwise), and inch or micron files are converted to mm.
- Plates in Bambu Studio projects.
What is a 3MF file?
3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) was created in 2015 by a group including Microsoft, Autodesk, HP and Shapeways as a modern replacement for STL. Under the hood a 3MF is a ZIP archive with XML inside. It stores:
- Units: millimetres by default, so models open at the right size.
- Several objects, each with a name and position.
- Colours and materials.
- Compact, connected meshes, so files are usually much smaller than STL.
Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer also save whole projects as 3MF, adding their own extras: build plates, print settings and painted colours. Those extras aren't part of the 3MF standard, which is why a project from one slicer doesn't always open fully in another.
Why 3MF files sometimes don't open elsewhere
Plates, painted colours and print settings are slicer-specific additions. A program that only knows the standard may show nothing, show the wrong objects, or (for Bambu projects in other slicers) load the geometry and ignore the settings. Bambu Studio itself shows “The 3mf is not from Bambu Lab, load geometry data and color data only” for files from other apps. That's normal: it means the settings were skipped, not that the model is broken.
Tip: a 3MF is a ZIP file. Rename it to .zip to see what's inside: the model XML, thumbnails and slicer settings.
Want the model in another format? Convert 3MF to STL or 3MF to OBJ.
Questions
How do I open a 3MF file without installing anything?
Drop it into the viewer at the top of this page. It opens in your browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone, with no sign-up and no upload.
Can I see which plate each object is on?
Yes, for Bambu Studio projects. The viewer shows a button per plate; pick one to see only its objects and export just that plate.
How do I check the size of a 3MF model?
The size in millimetres (width × depth × height) is shown as soon as the file opens. Use Measure to check any distance between two points.
Does the viewer show colours?
Yes: 3MF colours and materials, Bambu filament colours and PrusaSlicer extruder colours. Painted areas are shown in the object's filament colour for now.
Is my 3MF in millimetres or inches?
3MF files state their unit, and millimetres is the default. The viewer reads the unit and always shows sizes in mm.
Why doesn't Windows show a thumbnail for my 3MF?
Thumbnails depend on the file containing a preview image and on Windows supporting it. The viewer doesn't need thumbnails: it shows the real model in 3D.
