How to convert 3MF to STL
- Drop your 3MF above. Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and MakerWorld files all work.
- Check the preview. Multi-plate Bambu projects get plate buttons; untick objects you don't want.
- Download one merged STL or each object as its own STL (in one zip).
Your file is processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so paid models stay private.
What you lose when converting 3MF to STL
STL is older and simpler: it only stores triangles. When you convert:
- Units aren't stored. Every slicer assumes millimetres, and the STL is written in mm, so sizes stay right.
- Colours and painted areas are dropped.
- Separate objects are merged into one, unless you choose one STL per object.
- Plates and print settings aren't carried over. Pick a plate before exporting to get just its objects.
If you're moving between modern slicers, a 3MF is usually the better format to keep. Convert to STL when a program only accepts STL, or for CAD and older software.
Bambu Studio and MakerWorld files
Bambu Studio stores each object in a separate file inside the 3MF (the 3MF “production extension”) and keeps plates and filament colours in its own settings files. Not every program reads that layout:
- UltiMaker Cura 5.10 and older show “No Models in File”. Cura 5.11 (October 2025) added Bambu 3MF import, so updating fixes it too. More on the Cura problem.
- Tinkercad doesn't import 3MF at all (it takes STL, OBJ and SVG), so convert to STL first.
- Many CAD programs read only plain 3MF, or only STL.
This tool reads Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer projects directly: every object, its name, its plate and its filament colour. Modifier and negative parts, which aren't printed, are left out.
Got a file ending in .gcode.3mf? That's a sliced plate: it contains the printer's instructions, not the 3D model, so there's nothing to convert. Download the project 3MF instead.
What is a 3MF file?
3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) was created in 2015 by a group including Microsoft, Autodesk, HP and Shapeways as a modern replacement for STL. Under the hood a 3MF is a ZIP archive with XML inside. It stores:
- Units: millimetres by default, so models open at the right size.
- Several objects, each with a name and position.
- Colours and materials.
- Compact, connected meshes, so files are usually much smaller than STL.
Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer also save whole projects as 3MF, adding their own extras: build plates, print settings and painted colours. Those extras aren't part of the 3MF standard, which is why a project from one slicer doesn't always open fully in another.
Exporting from your slicer instead
If you have the slicer that made the file, it can export too:
- Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer: File → Export → Export all objects as one STL… or …as STLs…, or right-click an object and choose Export as one STL.
- PrusaSlicer: File → Export → Export Plate as STL/OBJ, or right-click an object → Export as STL/OBJ.
- UltiMaker Cura: File → Export… (or Export Selection…) and pick the file type.
This tool is for when you don't have that slicer installed, the file won't open in yours, or you want to check and pick objects first, on any device.

Questions
How do I convert 3MF to STL for free?
Drop the 3MF into the tool at the top of this page and click Download STL. You can export everything as one STL or each object separately. It's free, needs no account, and the file never leaves your device.
Will I lose colours when converting 3MF to STL?
Yes. STL can't store colour, so filament colours and painted areas are dropped. Keep the 3MF if you need them, or export each colour's object as its own STL.
Should I export one STL or one per object?
One STL per object keeps parts separate so you can arrange them or give each a different filament. A merged STL is simpler when the model is meant to print as one piece.
Can I convert a Bambu Studio or MakerWorld 3MF?
Yes. Bambu projects store objects in separate files and plates in their own settings, which this tool reads, including object names, plates and filament colours.
Can I get the STL out of a .gcode.3mf file?
No. A .gcode.3mf is a sliced plate: it contains printer instructions, not the model geometry. Use the project 3MF, or export STL from the slicer that has the project open.
Why won't my 3MF open in Cura?
Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer store each object in its own file inside the 3MF, which Cura 5.10 and older don't read, so they show "No Models in File". Update to Cura 5.11 or newer, convert the file to STL here, or export a generic 3MF from Bambu Studio (File → Export → Export Generic 3MF).
Is STL or 3MF better?
3MF stores units, colours and separate objects in a smaller file, so it's better between modern slicers. STL is simpler and works everywhere, including older software and CAD tools.
